What are wisdom teeth (tooth number 8)?
wisdom teeth (the eighth teeth, third molars) are the last teeth to erupt, consisting of four in each jaw, usually appearing between the ages of 17 and 25.
Most people’s jaws only have enough space for 28 teeth, so wisdom teeth often don’t have enough room to erupt straight and end up impacted, crooked, or growing sideways – easily causing inflammation, pain, and affecting the adjacent seventh tooth.

The dentist uses local anesthesia, so the patient usually doesn’t feel any pain during the extraction. After the anesthesia wears off, there may be some soreness and slight swelling for a few days, which will gradually subside with medication and proper aftercare as instructed.
Depending on the complexity of the tooth: straight, simple teeth may only take a few minutes; impacted or horizontally positioned teeth require more time. The dentist will inform you in advance after reviewing the X-ray.
Swelling is usually mild for the first 2-3 days and gradually subsides. Apply a cold compress on the first day, take medication as prescribed, and see a doctor if swelling and pain persist.
Hold cotton in your mouth to stop the bleeding for 30-60 minutes; for the first 24 hours, avoid vigorous rinsing, smoking, and using straws; eat soft, cool foods; and avoid chewing on the side where you just spat.
Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted. If they grow straight, have opposing teeth that fit together properly, and can be cleaned, they may be able to be kept. The dentist will examine the tooth and provide specific advice.
